Spring 2022 at L&C: BIO 335 Ecology
This course will focus on the principles of ecology and their implications for analyzing environmental problems. The focus will be understanding the processes controlling the dynamics of populations, communities, and ecosystems. We will focus on questions including: How much biological diversity is out there? How is diversity studied across different scales? How did all of this diversity evolve? Why does understanding biological diversity matter? What can we learn about ourselves by studying other species?
Classes will be a mixture of group activities, discussions, and conventional lectures. Each week we will have a lab and will get outside if the PNW weather allows, and there will be at least one overnight trip.

My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy has two interrelated goals. First is to increase student engagement, and the other is to deepen student comprehension. For students to learn they must be engaged in a topic, and with so many competing tasks and responsibilities in a student’s daily life it can be challenging to maintain high levels of student engagement in and outside of class. I engage students by using diverse and innovative teaching methods and use student feedback to modify my teaching techniques to meet student needs. I am committed to providing a high-quality undergraduate experience, and constantly reflect on the effectiveness of my teaching through both qualitative and quantitative methods.
Below you can find some examples of the classes that I have taught in the past
